Position Overview

The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the general supervision of the laboratory personnel and the daily operations of the analytical laboratory.The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor will also perform high complexity laboratory testing on patient specimens, interpret and report patient results, and perform quality control and quality assurance procedures while complying with all applicable local, state, and federal laboratory requirements. The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor is the first point of contact for Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLSs) and Laboratory Technicians during laboratory processing and will provide guidance while troubleshooting complex technical and non-technical problems. The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor must also act as a liaison between the CLSs and Laboratory Technicians and the Laboratory Management Team.

The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor will also be involved with coaching and mentoring the laboratory staff, building effective teams, managing projects and meeting project deliverables, and understanding and implementing laboratory goals.

The schedule will be Monday to Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm (onsite).

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide day-today supervision of laboratory personnel.
  • Lead the daily operations of the laboratory; including, but not limited to, scheduling, sample workflow management, and providing or coordinating staff training.
  • Identify and troubleshoot high complexity problems that adversely affect test performance.
  • Perform administrative duties; including, but not limited to, writing employee performance evaluations and reviewing standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols, non-conformance reports, quality control (QC) forms, and equipment maintenance forms.
  • Lead inspection preparation activities for all applicable regulatory bodies.
  • Participate in the management of the department's training program in collaboration with the education and training Team.
  • Participate in intra and inter departmental study and project teams.
  • Coach and mentor CLSs and Laboratory Technicians by providing guidance, constructive feedback, and assisting with the development of the troubleshooting and judgment skills.
  • Participate in the annual performance review process for team members.
  • Manage the testing and validation of new laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Perform laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses according to the laboratory's standard operating procedures, as needed.
  • Review, interpret, and approve patient results as needed.
  • Assist with the hiring and training of new laboratory personnel and training of new procedures with existing personnel.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities.
  • Supervisor staff; including, but not limited to, organize and prioritize work, write/conduct performance reviews, train/develop, and manage work performance.

  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including pipettes.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, blood or blood products and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Chemical or Biological Sciences; or Military Education equivalent.
  • 6+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory.
  • Possession of a valid California CLS license and maintain throughout employment in position.
  • Advanced working knowledge of local, state, and federal laboratory regulations.
  • Demonstrated outstanding professionalism, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong technical skills and professional working knowledge of job and industry.
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills.
  • Demonstrated strong laboratory automation skills.
  • Strong computer skills to include Internet navigation and email usage.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in high volume laboratory.
  • Experience with laboratory automation.
  • Strong working knowledge in the areas of laboratory technology, management principles, laboratory information system (LIS) management, and workflow needs and capabilities.
  • Training in molecular biology techniques.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

Salary Range:

$129,000.00 - $194,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - Redwood City on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
