DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The organizing principle of the Integrative Oceanography Division (IOD) resides in a shared commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary science. "Integrative" denotes our philosophy that multiple approaches are important in creating a better understanding of the ocean system. We take great pride in our membership of physical, biological, chemical and geological oceanographers, climate and information scientists, data and information managers, engineers, technicians, education specialist, administrative and management professionals. IOD distinguishes itself as scientific home for researchers working at the boundaries of traditional academic spheres, and generating growing programs in the integration of research with informatics as well as with education and public outreach. From pelagic to benthic ecology, shoreline to open ocean dynamics, data to information systems, our research encompasses field work, laboratory experimentation and computer modeling to acquire, integrate, synthesize and understand diverse data sets to elucidate the underlying dynamics of complex, multidimensional ocean systems.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Applies professional concepts, department / unit and campus / medical center / OP policies and procedures to resolve a variety of complex issues in one or more IT areas of specialization. Analyzes complex issues. Within defined procedures and practices, determines appropriate action.

Acts as a full stack developer within a team of IT professionals supporting the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP), an oceanographic engineering research group responsible for maintaining a national network of moored wave buoys. Responsible for tasks involved in maintenance and development of both front-end and back-end of the CDIP website and data telemetry channels.

Web programming responsibilities include coding data and visualization products, both legacy and newly developed, for cloud platforms and user interfaces, established as well as emerging.

IT support responsibilities are to maintain operability of all software and resources specific to cloud instances.

Support of CDIP's shop and field operations for wave buoy station maintenance includes intervals of 24/7 watch keeping duty, sensor data review, and proactive communications across the CDIP team and with external partners, and may include occasional field work.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.

  • Expert ability at Python coding. Ability to read, interpret, and translate code written in FORTRAN and Matlab.

  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, server and peripherals-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis.

  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT.

  • Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.

  • Demonstrated experience with database administration. Working knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge relating to database system design. Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases.

  • Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion.

  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks. Ability to identify and install appropriate updates for LINUX OS and Docker platforms in Amazon Web Services network infrastructure.

  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.

  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.

  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements. Ability to interpret geophysical sensor data in the context of measuring activity of waves, winds, ocean currents, and temperatures.

  • Knowledge of mathematical concepts involved in Fourier transformation between time series and frequency spectra.

  • Skill developing and maintaining web pages utilizing JavaScript, HTML, PHP, Apache, and other common protocols.

  • Knowledge of Data Servers, specifically THREDDS and ERDDAP.

  • Ability to script using Bash and C-Shell in Solaris and Docker containers.

  • Skill using and developing APIs using Django.

  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.

  • Interpersonal skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $82,500 - $151,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $39.51 - $72.56

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
